It's hard to believe that I'm already through one fourth of my time in college. I've learned a lot, met a lot of great people, and had some awesome experiences. Most of all, I have fallen in love with the University of Washington. I guess I can just list all of the things that I really enjoy about UW, besides the campus being gorgeous. First, the food - not necessarily the food at my sorority, but the food on the ave, specifically Thai food. I have lived in Seattle my whole life, so I don't know why I haven't tried Thai before. Since UW was my first place to have Thai, UW is now forever linked to it in my mind. Second, I love the people. UW is full of bright and driven young people. I have especially enjoyed meeting all of the people in the Honors Program because they are so much like myself. They have a deep passion for learning and exploring ideas. In my Public Health classes as well, I encounter so many cool people that are truly interested in their studies. Third, I love the diversity. Not only the diversity of people, but the diversity of ideas, academic fields, activities. You could literally do whatever you want to at UW and have someone who wants to do it with you no matter how out there it is. Next, I am in awe of UW science. First of all, there are buildings dedicated to the most specific area of science that you could ever imagine. UW attracts the most talented and well versed scientists. I am really looking forward to getting involved with hopefully some Public Health research in the future. Building off of that, I could not have picked a better school to attend to major in Public Health. It is one of the top schools in the country, and Seattle is the Public/Global Health hub of the world really. I am so excited to see what the future has in store. The classes that I've taken have been AWESOME! (All of which can be read about under my course reflections). What I've learned most in joining the Honors Program and taking classes from amazing faculty is that all knowledge is connected. During high school, subjects were very separated. Now, I've learned that knowledge is quite the opposite - there is a constant transfer of knowledge in all of my studies. Perhaps this is because I'm majoring in something very interdisciplinary in nature and I'm taking interdisciplinary Honors classes. Whatever the case, I wouldn't want to have it any other way because it has expanded my world so much already and I'm so excited to learn more. The biggest event of the year was being admitted to the Public Health Major! I worked incredibly hard on my personal statement and I'm very happy to be a member of the program. Additionally, I joined the task force for one of the Public Health Major advisors, Tory Brundage, for a new student organization, Public Health Dawgs. Spring Quarter we have been working on developing what Public Health Dawgs will look like, and now we will start recruiting people to join us. Some other significant events were the Women in Sports Month visits and Football Education Month which I discuss in my experiential learning link. As for the summer, I will be volunteering at Starlight Children's Foundation as a Program Services Intern creating and planning events for medically fragile children and their families. I will also be assisting the head volleyball coach at my old high school, Eastside Catholic during open gyms over the summer. I will also help my supervisor for my Campus & Community Engagement Assistant position, Ink Aleaga, with his nonprofit, Taro Roots. Of course I have some normal summer activities lined up as well. I'm going down to the Oregon Coast for a weekend, going to the John Mayer concert at the Gorge, and going camping with my friends! Although I have a fun summer ahead, I'm already looking forward to Fall Quarter 2013 :) |
