Animal Planet |
Taking this Honors class was one of the best experiences I have ever had. Animal Planet was taught by a brilliant professor, Maria Elena Garcia. She's knowledgeable, experienced, and thoughtful; I am very lucky to have learned from her.
The material of the course focused on all sorts of issues surrounding animals: from treatment of animals to the roll that animals play in economics, health, and the environment. One of the main assignments was a weekly blog. I enjoyed it because blogging allowed me to work through my confusing and heavy thoughts in a constructive and intellectual format.
Winter quarter of my freshman year (during which time I took this class) was a turning point for me as a student and an individual. I was exposed to numerous social issues, including animal welfare - the subject of this course. It is when I began to develop my critical thinking skills as an intellectual. (It is also when I became a pescetarian!)
