G H 490: The Health of Populations
In this course, I learned about what produces health overall in a population. We learned extensively about the relationship between inequality in a population and ill-health, the importance of early life, the impact of the built environment on health.
The main assignments for the class were community engagement exercises in which we taught themes of the course to others. I found this task to be challenging, but an important exercise in learning how to discuss difficult - and sometimes controversial - topics with peers. For the first one, I screened a documentary titled, "Unnatural Causes", which focuses on how inequality in a population produces ill-health. I showed a segment of this documentary called "Place Matters" to the AP Biology class at my high school and then facilitated a discussion. |
For the second community engagement exercise, we were encouraged to use our creativity and come up with something unique. I decided to create a way in which I could reach many people at once. I created a Twitter account called Health Is Ours to tweet about interesting and thought-provoking tidbits of information presented in the class by the professor, Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, and to re-tweet related information from other sources.
