Political and Moral Context of Education and Schooling |
In this class, I was exposed to the implications of American public education. We discussed the history of who gets what and why in public schools (or "who gets the goodies?" as my professor liked to say), the moral role of the teacher, how to evaluate teachers, the relationship between a give political regime and its educational system, and more.
Looking back on this course years later, I can very clearly see how all of the issues that we raised are interconnected with my public health studies: like the impact of poverty on childhood development, the effect of racism on the life-course of the individual, and the importance of early childhood education.

The purpose of the final essay was to synthesize ideas from readings, guest lectures, discussions, and other students to address the fundamental questions of the course.
